How to compose the best Christmas hamper

From the wide choice of typical products that our tradition provides, choose the gift recipient's favourite specialities. If you don't know their taste, here are the products, quality products I recommend, that cannot be missing from a Christmas gift basket that is always welcome.

  • a quality liqueur, such as a herbal amaro, a grappa of Barolo, a nocino.
  • a bottle of DOC wine or a bubbly
  • pasta and sauces
  • Carnaroli rice and selected dried mushrooms
  • sweet and sour vegetables or giardiniera
  • a slice of charcuterie such as speck, culatello or a small salami
  • cotechino and lucky lentils
  • extra virgin olive oil
  • honey or jam
  • dried fruit
  • coffee
  • Christmas sweets to choose from: panettone, pandoro, nougat (without forgetting the artisanal ones, such as Sardinian and Sicilian) and regional specialities such as pandolce genovese or bisciola valtellinese.

Now that you know what to put in your Christmas gift basket, you may be wondering what number of products is needed to make a good impression. There is no such thing as the perfect number, it depends on the type of gift you are thinking of: a pastry panettone and a quality bubbly are already a nice thought!

In general for a corporate gift you start with 3 up to 15 products.

For a personal gift , Christmas baskets can be basic, with 3 but exquisite specialities, or very rich, with around 20 delicacies.

The container should be chosen proportionally: never put three things in a basket or box that is too big, because it will look paltry.

Now you are ready to create your unique Christmas gift, but if you need extra help, there is the ReRegalo.Store Configurator!

Christmas Hampers: Origins and Curiosities

The origin of Christmas gift boxes dates back to the Saturnalia of Ancient Rome (217 BC), the festivities held in honour of the god Saturn in the days leading up to the winter solstice. Emperor Domitian established the duration: from 17 to 23 December. At this time of year, citizens exchanged gifts: candles, then, but mainly delicacies.

Saturnalia

The Saturnalia are the festivities that accompanied the last days of Saturn and his wife Opis on earth: together with other crop-protecting deities, they were believed to come out from underground to roam the fields and forests in the early winter cold, until the winter solstice on 21 December. On this day they returned to the Underworld to protect the seeds and ensure a good summer harvest. The Saturnalia were precisely dedicated to honouring Saturn to win his benevolence and protection. It was a time of revelry and total freedom, where even social barriers fell and slaves could sit at the table with their masters.

Each day had its own rituals, with offerings to the temple, processions, craft markets (a timeless tradition too!). On 17 December, the state offered a large public banquet, but people were also received in private homes, where it was customary to arrive with sportule (baskets woven with esparto leaves) filled with olives, figs, honey, but also sausages, game and cheese: these boxes were the strenne, the 'good omen gifts', destined to have a very long success.

The poet Martial dedicates some epigrams (Xenia) precisely to the 'gastronomic' gifts exchanged during the Saturnalia: verses that presented the sportulas in an original and sympathetic way.

Here are some of them: shall we be inspired?

"I am the Lucanian daughter of a sow from Piceno / will be a welcome crown to the white polenta" (in ode to sausage)

"These turnips we give you, ripened in the winter frost, / are the ones Romulus eats up there in the sky" (and even a simple turnip becomes a special gift)

"Let the duck be served whole: but superfine goodness / is only the breast and the head. The rest send it back to the cook" (gourmet advice)
